CNIE Blog (December 2014) As the Vice President of CNIE I’d like to welcome everyone to our monthly news! Members of our board will strive to provide you news regarding our association, upcoming events and interesting news from our desks in regards to innovation in education. Our 2015 conference… A quick update on our upcoming conference in 2015; as you may have noticed this year is our first year of working with the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE) to provide you with access to a joint event. Hosted by the University of Manitoba we hope you will join us for Beyond Diversity: Learning and Working in an Inclusive World this coming May. It is our hope that by collaborating with CAUCE that we can provide our members with a rich variety of speakers and presenters over the course of the three day conference. eCampusAlberta… Alberta’s provincial consortium, eCampusAlberta, supports online programming across our province’s public post-secondary institutions. There are some great resources available from this consortium including a monthly PD webinar. They also record the sessions and archive them – these sessions are all available through the eCampusAlberta Online Professional Development Events site at:http://moodle.ecampusalberta.ca/groups/course/view.php?id=11; I presented in November on designing online programs. CNIE, Message from the President, June 2012 I am thrilled to serve as CNIE’s President this year. Our membership represents the brightest of educational innovators across Canada. It is a privilege to be in such good company. I am grateful for the support of our volunteer Board of Directors and Tim Howard’s consistent dedication as the Secretariat. Lorraine Carter’s passion and commitment to CNIE as the 2011-12 President leaves CNIE with a bright future. My hope is that I can nurture the positive momentum Lorraine has fostered. The 2012 CNIE Green Aware Conference in Canmore was a great success. The rocky mountain scenery and sunny skies were second to none. We also enjoyed a breadth of quality presentations and discussions. (Presentation slides can be found http://www.cnie-rcie.ca/?q=node/562) I personally enjoyed making new friends as well as reconnecting with past friends, colleagues, and former professors. A huge thank you to is owed to the Centre for Flexible and Teaching and Learning at Nipissing University in North Bay, ON for making the CNIE conference a huge success. Patrick Lyons has promised us an equally beautiful location for our 2013 annual conference to be held May 1 – 3 at Carleton University in Ottawa. Our theme for the conference will be Leadership in Education with streams in Instructional Technology, Teaching and Learning, Innovations in Education, and Research. Our planning committee is in place and I look forward to seeing you in Ottawa. In closing, thank you to everyone who has shared their ideas for keeping CNIE so vibrant. CNIE Membership Promotion Strategies During the summer of 2009, a Committee of CNIE- RCIÉ directors – Lorraine Carter and Helena Fehr – chaired by former CADE president, Bill Fricker, discussed ways to enhance CNIE’s- RCIÉ’s membership. Additional input was provided by: Maureen Baron and Maria Chow (CNIE-RCIÉ directors), Tim Howard (Director of Administration), and Brad Johnson (web design, BB Webmedia.) The Committee reviewed the results of an online survey (administered by CNIE- RCIÉ members Bettina Brockerhoff-McDonald and Maureen Baron) which collected information about CNIE members’ work and professional interests. Lorraine Carter shared the results of the Canadian Association of University Continuing Education (CAUCE) Institutional Members Survey, which summarized member feedback on numerous member services and priorities. Both documents are appended to the Committee’s report. Report Structure Seven overarching categories ranging from implementing specific marketing tactics to addressing membership privileges (CNIE- RCIÉ services and supports) were identified: • Online registration • Marketing tools • Creation of repository of key contacts – institutional members • Membership targets as well as identification of specific sectors for strategic targeting • Web—#1 as a community tool • Web-based/online opportunities • New CNIE- RCIÉ identity Within these seven categories, 23 strategies were recommended. Each may be selected for implementation independent of other strategies and/or in combination with another strategy. The Board reviewed the Committee’s report during the autumn of 2009 to discuss which strategies to implement as well as timing and required supports for implementation. The Board encourages members to review the Executive Summary of the Committee’s report, which is attached, and to provide feedback and recommendations to cnie-rcie@cnie-rcie.ca
Executive Summary History During the summer of 2009, a Committee of CNIE- RCIÉ Board Members chaired by former Board Member, Bill Fricker, discussed ways to enhance CNIE’s- RCIÉ’s membership. New CNIE- RCIÉ identity o Create new CNIE identity o Create logo o Create business identity package (business cards, banners, letterhead etc.) o Brand website o Align mission and values with strategies (7 –S or PERT) Outcome of the Recommendations The CNIE-RCIÉ Board of Directors categorized the sections and strategies as completed, to be implemented, or no action possible due to financial or human resources constraints. For example, categories I and VII have been completed. The remaining suggestions will be included in a three year plan as finances and human resources permit. March is now upon us, and it’s hard to believe that spring will soon be here. Early-bird registration for the CNIE-RCIÉ 2010 conference -which ends on March 31st- has already blossomed. This year’s theme, “Heritage matters: Inspiring Tomorrow” promises a wealth of professional development opportunity for all our member communities. The inclusion of the Harbourside Hangouts with the more formal presentations in the schedule will be a great way to view St. John while networking with technical & professional colleagues from all over Canada and the globe! Then of course, there are also the great keynote speakers representing a wide range of expertise and a wider variety of geographical locations. Visiting Alec Couros’ class and listening to Nora Young’s podcast 104 on Online Friendship and the geoweb was informative. Are you listed on www.pleaserobme.com? Daniel Peraya’s talk on youtube interview (Interview de Daniel PERAYA) only wets the appetite for more. Using technology in intelligent ways to improve pedagogy touches us all. How more innovative than these speakers can you get? This is only the tip of the iceberg, as the concurrent sessions and panel discussions promise to be just as thought-provoking. New this year is the creation of pre-conference virtual meeting spaces in Ning, Facebook and Twitter. These venues allow members to e-socialize and share ideas. As in-coming President, I encourage you to introduce yourselves to me either virtually at Ning or at the conference. Hello Everyone: My name is Lorraine Carter, and it is a special pleasure to be sharing a few thoughts about who I am and my affiliation with CNIE. In my opinion, CNIE is a uniquely special organization as it brings together very talented people who are, above all, interested in education through the effective and innovative use of technology. What a powerful combination—people and educational opportunity enabled by technology. As for my career, it has, in a few words, been rich and diverse. In particular, I have worked at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario since 1988 with a sojourn of one year with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in curriculum development/instructional design and four years in a Ministry of Health and Long-term Care position with the Ontario Telemedicine Network. At Laurentian, while I have enjoyed a cross-section of responsibilities, those I have particular affection involve distance and online education. Notably, these commitments included instructional design and project management work in Laurentian University’s Centre for Continuing Education, a unit well known for its long and established history of distance education. In similar fashion, I was fortunate to work as the Education Manager with the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) where I met and worked with hundreds of wonderful healthcare professionals, all of whom used distance and communication technologies for health and education. After my time with OTN, I returned to Laurentian where I am presently a faculty member. Through and through, I regard myself to be an educator. After my Master’s degree at the University of Western Ontario, I completed a Bachelor of Education through the University of Toronto and, more recently, a PhD in Educational Studies through the University of Windsor. Fellow Sufferers: This is the first in a series of reports that will be coming your way from the various members of your Board of Directors. It’s my pleasant task to go first, and your Past President is principally concerned, this time of year, with nominations and Board continuity. Nominations: 2010 is the first year for significant turn-over in the CNIE Board, as the first cadre of founding Directors reaches the end of their three-year mandate. So, before we go any further, let me formally thank Maria Chow (Vice President and President-elect, K-12 rep), Anna Sawicki (Secretary-Treasurer, government rep), Helena Fehr (media producers & distributors rep), David Kidney (education/training technology specialists’ rep), and Carolyn Nobes (distance/open learning professionals rep & Chair of the Awards Committee) for their very great generosity of time and effort in keeping your professional association together and on course. Maria, of course, will ascend to the Presidency in May 2010 -even as I, too, leave the Board. Together with Maureen Baron, Lorraine Carter, and Mike Power, she will provide our Association with energetic and youthful continuity as we move forwards- not to mention a Francophone presidency. Of course, the vacancies for 2010 leave plenty of room for new ideas and different skills at the Board. We seek nominations for not only a new VP (President-elect) and a Secretary-Treasurer, but also three, additional Directors at large. 2005-11-24 Journal of Distance Education – Anglophone Editor The Canadian Association for Distance Education (CADE) invites your institution to submit a proposal to edit and publish the Journal of Distance Education for a three- year term beginning 1 July 2006. The proposal to publish the Journal needs to name an Anglophone editor. The editor will seek papers of high quality, screen manuscripts, select reviewers, consult with an editorial board, oversee the review process and make final decisions, provide potential contributors to the Journal with feedback on the progress of their papers submitted for publication, and edit manuscripts. In collaboration with the French-language editor, the Anglophone editor will supervise the preparation and production of three issues each year, maintain editorial records, administer copyright policy, and answer general inquiries. The number of article submissions received per year has typically been about fifty. While the editors report to the Board of Directors on the financing and production of the publication and answer for its policies and procedures, they are independent from the Board of Directors in terms of the publication�fs policies and procedures. These are determined in concert with the publication�fs Advisory Board. The editors are responsible for ensuring editorial standards are maintained; for developing and maintaining a schedule of publication for each issue of the Journal, for reviewing policies and practices; and for working with copy editors, book review editors, and a press to ensure production standards are maintained. Current editorial policy is to publish articles in the language submitted, English or French, and to translate the abstract of each article into the other language. As Co- Chair of the CADE Journal Advisory Board, the editor is invited to attend monthly CADE Board of Directors meetings by teleconference and the annual Board meeting held in Ottawa in September.
